Journey to the 2006 Lincoln Half Marathon

Chuck - 8 / 55:45

23 out of 40. I am really rolling right now. Runs that would have been impossible last year are not a problem.

Bob - 4.8/8:49

Ask and you shall receive - 58 degress this morning. Windy, but quickly throwing on shorts and a T-shirt was quite enjoyable.

Timberlane then Railroad Ave out-and-back.

Right now I'm targeting runs of 9, 11, and 13.1 the next 3 Saturdays.

Wednesday, March 29, 2006

Bob - 5.2/9:03

Two loops around the smaller Timberlane route. This introduces more hills.

35 degrees is a bad temp for a run. For me it's too cold for shorts, but my wind pants get a little warm. Can't wait until it's consistently at least 50 degrees in the morning.

P.S. Started lifting weights again recently, and my entire body is sore.

Chuck - 7.25 / 56:35 / 7:48

15 out of 40. Mama Cass. I have previously said that my goal for this route is under 55:00. I am getting close.

Chuck - 8.0 / 7:30

8 out of 40

Bob - 5K/9:30

Ouchy sore legs. You would think that after a week of nachos and beer I would be in better shape.

I'm going to ramp up to a 13.1 mile run before I leave for Europe. I'll only have 2 weeks left upon my return.

Saturday, March 25, 2006

Bob - 4.5/8:40

Finally got a run in - its been 12 days. Ouch.

Actually, I went nice and smooth and it felt pretty good. Hopefully I can ramp back fairly quickly to where I was.

Chuck - 5.5 / 8:00

My best guess on pace as my GPS does not work in the hills of San Francisco. Ran a deliberatly hilly route which included a run up Lombard steet ("the world's most crooked street").

Chuck - 15.0 - 7:55

San Francisco. One of the things I was looking forward to being in San Francisco was going for a run. It was really slow going at first as I left at 5:00 and there were a lot of people on the sidewalks. After I got to the bay it got a lot better. After awhile I could see the Golden Gate Bridge. Somehow I couldn't justify turning around when I was so relatively close. Before I knew it took me an hour to get to the base of the bridge. The way back was full of other runners. Kind of neat, and something you don't get in a smaller city like Omaha. People were also wearing a lot more clothing than I was. I suppose 60 degrees is not that warm here, but when you come from a foot of snow it's beautiful. Ended the run getting to my hotel on Nob Hill; steep, steep, steep. I disgusted all of the rich people in the lobby when I came in completely drenched in sweat. As I got on the elevator I realized that I also had blood stains on the nipples. That would probably be the reason they were staring and pointing.

Chuck 15 - 2 hours

Heavy snowstorm last night and this morning. I spent about an hour trying to figure out what I was going to do for my long run. It ended up being a choice between running the Wabash Trace or going to the gym. My thought was that the Wabash Trace could be absolutely beautiful with all the fallen snow, and that the actually path itself might be protected from a lot of snow accumulation by the trees lining the path. Could make for quite memorable run. I was worried about it being miserable though, i.e.; snow on ghte ground that made my feet wet for two hours. The fact I could watch NCAA basketball at the gym was the deciding factor.

I realize that it was a treadmill run, but two hours is two hours. The last mile was difficult and I'm not sure I could have done anymore. It was also the worst I have felt after a run in a long time, which in a sedistic way actually felt good. It seemed like I did nothing but sleep the rest of the day.

Chuck - 4.25 / 7:10

Was on my way to the bar for St. Paddy's Day and March Madness, but I just couldn't go three straight days without running.

Tried to run my Elmwood run a little harder. Was at a 7:00 pace through 3 miles but just couldn't hold it.

Bob - 1.5/15:00

Heather and I went North on beach from hotel about 1 mile, then returned most of the way. Hard to run in the sand, but who´s complaining?

Wednesday, March 15, 2006

Chuck - 5.2 / 7:57

Based on the speed, distance, and time of day, a very Bob-esque run this morning. I meant to run faster, but that early in the morning my already heavy legs are like tree trunks. Makes it very hard for me to pick up the pace when I need to.

Chuck - 8 / 1:00

Apparently Bob and I are on the exact same workout routine as we are running on exactly the same days. That's until he goes to Mexico.

I felt unbelievably well yesterday considering I had run 13 miles on Saturday. Thank god the weather was not good otherwise I may have considered plugging in a couple of miles just to get to thirty.

Limited myself to a fairly easy recovery day at the gym. I want to run tomorrow, but I may not have time.

Bob - 4.3/9:11

Exactly the kind of miserable weather I ordered up for the couple days leading into vacation.

Pretty typical recovery run. A little sore and a little tired from Saturday.

13.1 / 8:13

Something must be wrong with the satellites Timex is using for their GPS. 8:13!

Beautiful day except for the unbelievable wind. I kept having to try to slow down at the beginning as I took off at a 7:47 pace. Running up the huge hill at 72nd and Pacific into the wind slowed that time down considerably. However, 10 miles into the run, I was still on an 8:00 pace. The distance and running into the wind again at the end finally took their toll on me. I slowed to a 9 minute mile pace for the last three as I just wanted to get done.

Bob - 10.3/9:13

Feels good to break into double digits. Various notes from the run:

1. Basically ran to Pacific Junction and back, although I looped through town a couple of times.
2. No wind in Glenwood, major wind at the river bottom.
3. Perfect temp, especially when downwind.
4. PJ couldn't be a bigger shithole. From what I saw, pitbulls, meth labs, and child molestors are equally represented, and all without leash.
5. Good pacing - 9:19 for the first 5.75, 9:04 coming back.

Great week overall for me, I like how I'm rolling into vacation with lots of momentum. I'll drink beer freely and without guilt.

Bob - 4.5/7:55

Weather couldn't have been better. 55 and slight wind from the north. I got a little greedy with my pace, I had set my watch to avg pace, so I wanted to get a sub 8. Mission accomplished, but I was huffing and puffing a bit. Felt great afterwords, though, ready for a long one on Sat.

Chuck - 6.0 / 8:33

I don't know how one can run in the morning. Bob, have you ever considered this to be the problem for some of your slow times? My god, it took me almost two miles before my bones stopped creaking. Ran the extended Elmwood route all the way to Pacific St., but then had to run around the park next to my house to get up to six miles. Never really listened up. And now I will probably fall asleep at work.

Bob - 5.1/8:02

Excuse me why I pat myself on the back.

Check the time! What happened today? Don't know, really. Run after run I hover around the 9:00 mark for this length run, then today I pull out a 42:10 for 5.1 miles. I was trying to push it just a bit, and evidently it worked. Good weather, about 55 degress, with a steady wind from the south. Legs are tired, as this is the 4th run in 5 days. Time for a rest day.

Chuck - 7 / 48:10

Alarm went off at 6:00 this morning to go running. I said 'no thanks.'

I did, however, have enough common sense to grab some running gear for the gym after work. My runs on the treadmill cannot be compared to my other outdoor runs, or Bob's runs. Instead, they must be compared to last year's treadmill runs. A quick scan of those runs shows that my fastest 7-mile run was 50:50. That's an improvement of almost three minutes! And I wasn't even trying that hard. I could have definitely run it faster. Combine that with a lot more outdoor runs this year, and I am feeling pretty good about this Half-Marathon.

Monday, March 06, 2006

Bob - 4.1/8:59

I am a large, slow man.

Anyway, decent little recovery run this morning. Nice crisp morning. I like how the runs are starting to stack up a bit.

Chuck 9.3 / 8:48

30-mile week! Finished it off my running out military avenue and down Fort Street to the end of the Keystone Trail. Most of this was territory I have never run before. Very windy and boy did I feel it running up the hill from Benson Park to 72nd street. Probably similar to Brice Harris' hill.

The last time I had run the Keystone this far north was in 1997 after the October ice storm. All of the city's sidewalks were impassable from all of the fallen branches so I had to drive to the Keystone and run on it alone. I remember it getting dark and I was tripping on branches strewn across the trail.

Couldn't locate the old railroad tracks until I passed near an old bridge crossing the papio creek just north of Maple Street. I then ran by Chad Beardmore's work. I don't think he realizes how lucky he is to be working right on the edge of a former railbed.

Came back on Blondo street which I usually run out on. It's always interesting to run a route the opposite direction because you suddenly realize how many times you had actually been running down huge hills and hadn't realized it.

Chuck - 4+ = 4.2 / 7:31

My plan is to run a long run tomorrow, but since I had only 3.1 miles since Tuesday I figured my body could take a smaller run today.

I finally got my GPS out on the run that I ran twice last week. Ended up being about 4.16 which rounds up to 4.2 and that is what I had been putting it down as. I am not sure how I ran it in 31:35 because I wasn't running hard at all. That means the three times I have run it I have dropped my time from 34:12, to 32:51, to 31:35. Definitely can run that in under 30:00.

The run included bloody feet from my not wearing socks on Thursday.

Bob - 8.0/9:22

Pretty good long run for me. Mentally very challenging. Started out on my normal Timberlane route, then for some reason decided to keep my golf course spur going and head out of town. Ran out to Mineola road, but turned south on Brice Harris road. Came back into town by Catholic Church, 2 laps around the lake, then home. Very windy and very very hilly. The hill that stretches between Brice Harris house and Crawfords house is 6/10 of a mile. Big hill, and generally against the wind.

Overall, again, I love the GPS. Would have never felt comfortable just striking out like that without it.

Friday, March 03, 2006

Bob - 4.2/8:32

Finally got myself to go for a run before work. Pretty chilly morning, luckily no wind to speak of. The goatee was pretty frosty by the time I returned, though. Going to try for an 8 miler this weekend.

Thursday, March 02, 2006

3.1 / 19:47

Obvious treadmill run. Wanted to run sub 6:30 pace. Unfortunately I forgot my socks so three miles was all I could too. Running 3.1 was in 20:00 was unbelievably easy. Can definitely speed it up next time.
